NEW CASTLE —
The Mohawk High girls soccer team found a way to get a win Saturday.
Mikala Mangino scored the game-winning goal with just over 10 minutes left, lifting the Lady Warriors to a 2-1 WPIAL Class A first-round playoff win over Bishop Canevin at Upper St. Clair.
The 14th-seeded Lady Warriors (9-8-1) will play Seton-La Salle, a 1-0 winner over Neshannock, in the quarterfinals at a time and site to be determined on Wednesday. The winner moves on to the semifinals. Three teams from the WPIAL in Class A will reach the PIAA playoffs.
The 11th-seeded Lady Rebels are 8-10.
“We’re excited and looking forward to it,” Mohawk coach Mike Shornack said. “Hopefully they play at a high level against Seton-La Salle.
“We have a shot to win the game, but we have to come out and play hard.”
The third-seeded Lady Crusaders (11-3-2) broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal early in the second half.
“The first half was a defensive struggle,” Shornack said. “We seemed to start a little slow. Once we got in our comfort zone, we started to play better.
“We seemed a little nervous. I just sat back and let them get the jitters out. They didn’t let down when they were trailing, either. I was worried about that.”
Katelyn Byers tied the game at 1 around the midway point of the second half. Mangino earned the assist on the tally.
“We had some penetration and we dropped it to Byers,” Shornack said. “She hit it and it went in; that really gave us a lift.”
Mangino’s marker broke the tie.
“(Mangino) just came down the right side, made a move, shot the ball and got it past the far post and in,” Shornack said. “They were excited but they didn’t let down. They worked to preserve the win.
“We went into a little bit of a defensive mode after we took the lead. That last 10 minutes was probably our best 10 minutes.”
Aliya Gage made 12 saves in goal to earn the win.
“She’s strong for a freshman,” Shornack said. “We don’t even worry about the goalkeeper.”
