NEW CASTLE —
The Shenango High girls volleyball team kept its focus last night.
The Lady Wildcats didn’t look past visiting Avonworth, rolling to a 25-20, 25-8, 28-26 nonsection win.
Shenango (14-2 overall) will host section rival Laurel (8-2 section) tomorrow.
“We have a really excited team for that game,” Angela Heagy said. “We have the section title locked up, so it takes some of the pressure off.
“I hadn’t seen Avonworth play. The way they were talked up, I knew it would be a battle. I’m proud of my girls responding the way they did.”
Jade Esposito led the Lady Wildcats with 23 digs.
“Jade did a great job of covering the back line,” Heagy said. “I can’t really single out any one player though. A huge reason we won tonight was because everybody was just really tuned in and focused. They embraced the competition.”
Christina Rapone had 17 assists. Sophia Koury and Katie Lacey finished with 11 kills each.
Shenango’s junior varsity girls team won as well, 25-12, 25-11.
Angelina Sibeto led the team with 10 digs. Liz Quahliero and Irene Koury contributed five kills. Jenna DeLuca served four aces.
Lady Scots prevail
Union tuned up for the stretch run of the regular season with a nonsection win against visiting New Castle, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.
Morgan Miller led the Lady Scots (8-7) with seven kills. Tyanna Harris added seven assists. Christina Noble scored eight aces, three digs, and three assists.
“We did OK tonight,” Union coach Bob Miller said. “I thought the team could have played better.”
Miller still holds out hope that the Lady Scots will qualify for the postseason.
“If we win both of our remaining games, we’ll probably make it in,” Miller said. “It’ll be a pretty deep order.”
Union squares off against Laurel tonight on the road and will close out its regular season at home against Neshannock on Thursday.
Lady Lancers lose
Neshannock dropped a 17-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12 nonsection match to visiting Rochester.
“We ran into a problem losing that second game,” Neshannock coach Andrew Frank said. “It really took the air out of us.”
Frank liked the way the Lady Lancers (8-6) competed going into their last two section games at home against Western Beaver and away at Union.
“It was good competition to prepare for our last two games,” Frank said “Our girls gave 100 percent and left it all on the floor at the end.”
The Lady Lancers won the JV match, 25-12, 25-13.
Wilmington wins
The Lady Greyhounds knocked off Lakeview in nonregion action, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22.
“It’s always good to get a win, but the team continues to play sloppy,” Wilmington coach Amber Marett said. “Instead of finishing strong, we coast along and just play hard enough to win. That catches up with you when you play good teams.”
Cassidy Marett led the host Lady Greyhounds with 11 points, 18 assists, 10 digs and three kills. Abby Sotter was next with 10 points, 10 digs and five kills, while Katherine Clark collected seven markers and seven digs.
Tessa Sikora supplied six points, four kills and three blocks. Stephanie Parker delivered six points, six kills and five digs, while Lexi Ligo scooped up 10 digs with three points.
Wilmington lost the JV match, 25-18, 25-17.
Rachel Vernon recorded six digs and three points for the Lady Greyhounds and Amanda Lewis added three points and three digs. Alana Romeo scooped up five digs.
