  • Wrestling.jpg Ellwood City Wrestling Preview: ‘Next guy in line’ has Wolverines ready to roll

    In resurrecting the Ellwood City Lincoln High wrestling program, Craig Alberts was there all the way. After Ellwood City disbanded the sport in 2001, former Wolverines coach John Barnes organized a youth program for the sport in 2005. He asked Alberts to help get the program off the ground.

  • Veteran.jpg School to honor war hero with renaming

    The Ellwood City school district is renaming its auditorium after a fallen war hero. A formal ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Friday at Lincoln High School to name the auditorium the Leslie H. Sabo Jr. Memorial Auditorium.
    Sabo was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on May 16, 2012.

    Lincoln High School is ready to continue its annual tradition of presenting its “spring” musical in the fall. The challenging Broadway classic “Les Miserables” will open at 7 p.m. tomorrow and continue with performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The community’s two largest school districts, New Castle and Ellwood City, fell short of the mark and failed to meet the Adequate Yearly Progress threshold established by the state. And other individual schools throughout the county received critical assessments as well.

    Ellwood City High’s football team will have a new member when it travels to Riverside tonight, and it’s a girl.
    Ashley Nicole Lytle, a junior, has joined the Wolverines as a placekicker, according to a press release from the Ellwood law firm of Bellissimo & Peirce. She reportedly is the district’s first female football player.

    Someday, Rachael Baker aspires to enter the medical field, possibly as a physician’s assistant. So, the Laurel High School junior was enthused to be part of a small group that observed an aortic valve replacement at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

    All the scores Wednesday night at Taggart Stadium were of the musical variety rather than touchdowns. The home of New Castle High’s football team was the site of the 33rd annual Lawrence County Marching Band Festival. Laurel High School, under the direction of Nathan Daubenspeck, was the host band.

    Consistency paid off for two of Lawrence County’s most elite softball players. Amanda Furst of Neshannock and Kara Sainato of Ellwood City Lincoln were named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Softball Coaches Association  All-State Team.
