New school grading system unveiled Friday

HARRISBURG — County’s Title I schools

Below are the Lawrence County schools enrolled in the Title I funding program for extra assistance for reading and mathematics.

As a result, they must hit specific performance targets or risk being labeled as “priority” schools under a new grading system the state is expected to unveil today.

•Ellwood City — North Side Primary, Perry Lower Intermediate

•Laurel — Laurel Elementary

•Mohawk — Mohawk Elementary

•Neshannock — Neshannock Elementary

•New Castle — Harry W. Lockley Kindergarten Center; John F. Kennedy, Thaddeus Stevens and West Side primary centers; New Castle Junior-Senior High; and George Washington Intermediate Elementary

•Shenango — Shenango Elementary

•Union — Union Elementary, Union Middle

•Wilmington — New Wilmington Elementary, Pulaski Elementary, Wilmington Middle.

    Frank Aloi is retiring next month as Ellwood City’s superintendent of schools. Aloi, a 50-year district employee and its superintendent for nearly 12, submitted his retirement notice to the board during an executive session prior to Thursday’s meeting. His last day is July 16.

  • Lincoln High students win Envirothon

    Three students at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City were winners at this year’s Lawrence County Envirothon. The team, called the Dynamic Duo plus One, competed  May 6th at Cascade Park in the event that tests students’  knowledge of environmental science subjects.

    The conditions were ripe for a record-breaking performance. Ellwood City Lincoln High senior Keaton Docchio took full advantage of the warm weather to post four first-place finishes at Saturday’s Tri-County Track and Field Championships at Shenango High School.

    Nick Aloi may have to wait another year to play basketball. The WPIAL Board of Control ruled his transfer from Ellwood City Lincoln to Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in January was made with athletic intent.

    The Shenango and Ellwood City school districts have been awarded Safe Schools Initiative Targeted grants from the state. Each district will receive $25,000, according to state Sen. Elder Vogel.

    A child suffered minor injuries when her backpack was caught in a school bus door Thursday. Police said the 8-year-old girl was dragged by the bus in the Perry Township incident.
