Lincoln High students win Envirothon

NEW CASTLE — Three students at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City were winners at this year’s Lawrence County Envirothon.

The team, called the Dynamic Duo plus One, competed  May 6th at Cascade Park in the event that tests students’  knowledge of environmental science subjects. 

Hunter Price, Anneleise Williams and Logan Slade outshone other students in their knowledge about buying local/sustainability, soils, forestry, wildlife and aquatics.

The team received awarded a trophy, T-shirts and a cash award of $100.

Runners up were the FFA Boys from Laurel School District, which included Jared Zolina, Derek Boak, Phil Richards and Austin Green.

The third place team, Flower Power, from Union Area School District included David Bender, Sabrina Davis, Benjamin Tunkin, Olivia Farrone and Autumn Tulip.

The second and third place teams also received trophies, T-shirts and cash awards.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture  gave a special soils highest score award to the Wilmington area School District team called Girl Power. It’s members were Krista Robinson, Ketelyn Corner, Lexi Donati and Victoria Bauder.

The annual local Envirothon is coordinated by Jo Ann McCready of the Lawrence County Conservation District with assistance from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Lawrence County planning office.

The winning team will complete with first-place teams   from each county at the state Envirothon, set for  May 20 and 21 at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove.

The Lincoln High students are members of the school’s Envirothon Club.

The club’s other activities this school year included participation in the Adopt-A-Highway cleanup of the Wurtemburg Cut-Off in Perry Township and planting flowers at the high school. The club’s sponsors are Jody Christophe and Jonica Walters.
