Josh Drespling: Hmm, what if ...

NEW CASTLE — What if you could hit a pause button on your life? What if you could put your incredibly fast-paced day on hold for just a few moments? What if you could take a few minutes to regain your footing and composure as all those things that seem to be pressing inward on you become stagnant?

What if the floods of expectations and responsibility would disappear, even briefly?

You could wallow in a sea of tranquility as the pains and pressure of the world are immediately washed away. An instant of bliss sandwiched between work deadlines, phone calls, and errands that need to be run. What an amazing power that would be.

Let’s take it a step further and propose the possibility that you had the ability to freeze time, yet you alone would still be able to move freely and operate as usual. You would become immune to the effects of our world and society. You would never fall victim to another traffic jam. You would never miss the elevator door as it slides shut just as you reach out for it. You could pause time and gain a few extra hours of sleep and you, of course, would never be late for an appointment again.

You would be able to avoid accidents and even stop the swing of a hammer just before it crushes your thumb, resulting in excruciating pain. It would be a great way to play pranks on your friends and family. You could easily move an object to comedic places and set into action events that would leave your friends wondering how you did it.

You could alter your world unbeknownst to your fellow humans, but would you be wise enough to use your new-found power for only good? An astute comic book hero once uttered the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Are you strong enough to heed his warning, or will you become a dastardly villain? Would you be able to wield your supremacy with care and respect for mankind, or would you find pleasure in extracting revenge on your foes?

With your new-found talent it would be simple to pull off a bank heist of overwhelming magnitude and set yourself up for life. You could change the world for the better. Save children from undue harm. But would you care enough to exert the energy required to remedy all the world’s woes?

I’m not sure which category I would fall into, but I sure would be willing to give it a try. Of course, I imagine myself triumphing for all that is good. Eventually, I see myself slipping into a life of apathy, with a hardened heart to the despicable world around me.

How about you? Could you withstand the new-found pressures associated with such a super power? Maybe it is better to be late once in a while and take a smack on the thumb from a hammer, than to be responsible for such an overwhelming gift.
