Josh Drespling: Don’t call me creative ... but I hope you ‘like’ my portfolio

NEW CASTLE — Everyone thinks they are a photographer, an artist or a writer.

Why is it that everywhere I turn, I run into people who think they are writer, a photographer, or an artist?

These folks feel that since they bought a camera or own a computer that they can match the level of skill of people who have spent decades perfecting their craft. They plop down in front of a computer and import a couple less-than-impressive pictures of their cat or a sunset and add a filter, and suddenly its a work of art. They are proud of this complete and utter disaster.

In their minds, they have created a museum-quality masterpiece. They tout it to their Facebook "friends" and twist their arms to click "like." I believe if Facebook were to shut down tomorrow, we would be inundated with mobs of people roaming the streets in zombie-like trances, shoving pictures in each others' face saying, "Do you like this?"

I blame the Internet, in part, for this surge of self-fulfilling creationism with its instant gratification and ability to bring truth to the tale about "birds of a feather." However, I cannot entirely affix the full blame on the broad shoulders of the worldwide web. I also apply the shackles of guilt to those who feel it necessary to award trophies for merely participating and to the parents who applaud mediocrity.

In an age where our technology and entertainment have reached amazing heights, why is it that we exemplify under-achievement and magnify those with lackluster ability?

I know we were brought up to be kind and not say anything mean or hurtful to others, but I ask you, what is more hurtful to another person, to let them wallow in their own inability, disillusioned by dishonest words, or a momentary breath of reality from a true friend? A friend who cares enough to look them in the eye and tell them they are not cut out to be a artist, a writer, or the like.

In days gone by it was admirable to aspire to be a doctor, a lawyer, a nurse, even a steelworker, but now the title of creative is elevated to that of deities. As diploma mills churn out low-end, entry-level "artists" with portfolios of work that I would be embarrassed to put my name on, it is apparent that the mission of expressionism has become big business.

To me, the words "creative" and "artist" are dirty words. I despise being called either of those, because it lumps me into a category of JoAnne Fabric's soccer moms, wannabes taking painting classes at the community college, or a student at any one of the hundreds of "schools" that claim to exchange money for creative training.

The term has been hijacked and homogenized, thus rendering it meaningless. What was once a grand profession that was exemplified and nearly worshiped by every previous human culture, has been processed and regurgitated into a completely useless form of self-fulfillment.

So if you agree, please go to my Facebook page and click "like," and share this post with all your friends, and while you're at it, check out my photography and design portfolio ...

I've been trying diligently to eat right and make healthier choices in what I eat and put into my body. I'm now the guy at the grocery store who reads every label. You know, the guy with his buggy in the way while you’re trying to get in and get out.

As many of you may know, years ago I created and ran a nationally distributed magazine called Empire Extreme.  We covered all types of crazy and heavy music from all over the country. The more extreme, the better, was our unspoken motto.

It is 11:54 a.m. on May 4, 2012, and I am sitting slacked jawed and in awe of the immense loss that has befallen the music industry, fans and the planet as a whole. I am in disbelief at the text message I just received from a friend and music industry insider stating that Adam “MCA” Yauch of Beastie Boys fame has died.

Deep within the psyche of our society lie impressions of proper placement and duty. Whether intentional or subconscious, these representations of status and position are often exhibited in our actions and words. These mundane activities mirror our beliefs and our concepts and serve as a fabric upon which our personalities are built.

I used to have a dog. He was a good dog. A very good dog, in fact. His name was Pete. He was a pure bred Brittany Spaniel, with AKC papers and came from a long line of great hunting and show dogs.

Old Man Winter has released his mighty grasp on us and let spring settle upon us. The warm days are welcomed by a tradition that I remember fondly from my childhood, an event that in my youth seemed like the largest happening of the year.

To quote a rather prominent figure in human history, “It is finished.” I must admit my tasks of the last few days were on a much less grand scale and of lesser importance than the man who uttered those famed words. However, I challenge you to explain that to a 5-year-old girl who has eagerly anticipated her 6th birthday party for months and months.

Leave me alone. The phone is ringing with that new annoying ring tone I thought was so clever. “Ping ... Ping ...” goes  my computer as two more people message me on Facebook. I just checked all four of my email accounts and everybody seems to want something and, of course, they need it now.

Have you ever had one of those days? A day that just bombards you with every conceivable inconvenience? Not big, earth-shattering or life-changing things, but events that make keeping your head up just a little bit harder. Well, today was that day for me.

  • Zona.jpg Josh Drespling: Gerald Zona — the man, the myth, the memories

In an era of failing schools and administrations riddled with scandals, in a time when the line between student and teacher has been breached by sex crimes and abuse on both the part of the students and teachers, I would like to shine a light on a magnificent teacher who exemplified what it meant to care about his students and was willing to pour his whole life and soul into his trade.
