    State police have filed homicide by vehicle and other charges against a New Castle woman involved in a crash that killed a police officer. Police allege that Kylee Barletto, 25, was driving a vehicle that was being chased when it crashed into a police cruiser. Killed as a result of that collision was Shenango Township police officer William J.

  • Shenango.tiff Shenango officer killed during chase

    A Shenango Township police officer was killed Thursday night during a high-speed pursuit. According to the Associated Press, the officer is William J. “Jerry” McCarthy, 60. McCarthy worked part time for the Shenango Township Police Department and at the Lawrence County District Attorney’s office.

    A man arrested in his underwear after a domestic dispute allegedly had drugs hidden in his pants. New Castle police charged Kenneth Johnson, 45, of 736 Ridge St. in connection with both incidents.

    A Slippery Rock man with a New Castle optometry practice has been charged with receiving and possessing child pornography. According to court records, Mark Beres, 53, of 445 Center St., also admitted to engaging in sexual contact with three boys.

  • FBI.jpg Woman charged with embezzling $100,000-plus from church credit union

    A Lawrence County woman has been indicted on a charge of embezzlement from a credit union. The one-count indictment was returned Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton.

The Lawrence County commissioners have decided to solicit proposals for the private operation of the county jail. Good idea?

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
Not sure. The county seems to be doing a good job of running the jail now. Why break it if it’s not broken?
