Police: Reports for Dec. 18

NEW CASTLE — STATE

•Accident. Mary A. Thomas, 49, of Youngstown, told police she lost control of her vehicle after swerving to avoid hitting a small animal while westbound on Route 317/Poland Road in North Beaver Township at 12:25 a.m. Saturday. Officers said she struck a mailbox and concrete curb. No injuries were reported. Police said Thomas was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.

•Accident. Police said Catherine M. Babatino, 87, of Ellwood City, eastbound on Route 488/Portersville Road at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, hit a patch of ice that caused her car to slide, striking a utility pole. Officers said she sustained minor injuries.

•Accident. Police said Randy E. Klink, 30, of Ellwood City, stopped on Route 488 in Wayne Township, about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 11, prior to making a left turn onto Congress Street, was hit from behind by the vehicle of Brian P. Madrid, 22, of Enon Valley, also southbound on Route 488. Police said Klink and four passengers in his car, three of them children, reported minor injuries.

•Criminal trespass. Police said someone entered a house on 11th Street in Bessemer and went to sleep in the owner’s bedroom about 6 a.m. Friday. Police said the victim was awakened by the intruder, who fled.

•Theft. Police said a Sirius Satellite radio converter was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway of a home west of Route 108 in North Beaver Township between 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and noon Thursday.

NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP

•DUI arrest. Police charged Justine A. Vancise, 21, of 121 Lindey Road, Slippery Rock, with driving under the influence, careless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road. Police said Vancise was observed driving in a careless manner while northbound on Route 18 at 2:20 a.m. Sunday. Police said after failing several field sobriety tests, she was arrested and taken to Jameson Hospital for a blood alcohol test.

•Cited. Larry M. Verone, 58, of 2411 Pulaski Road, was charged with public drunkenness after police found him sitting in a yard on Pulaski Road near Cochran Drive screaming for help about 1 a.m. Sunday. Police said he was checked by EMS workers and transported to his residence.

•Arrest. Police charged Zach Lelii, 19, of 785 Sunset Valley Road with theft by unlawful taking on Thursday after receiving a report that prescription medication had been stolen from a metal lock box from a house in the 700 block of Sunset Valley Road.

NEW CASTLE

•Accident. Police said Nicholas S. Daltorio, 58, of 925 Beckford St., southbound on North Mercer Street about 11:45 a.m. Friday, struck pedestrian Denton Quin, 48, of 1410 1/2 Hamilton St. as Daltorio turned left onto East Washington Street. Police said Quin was walking across East Washington Street, northbound in the crosswalk. He was taken to Jameson Hospital. Officers said Daltorio was cited.

•Accident. Police said George Threats III, 19, of 820 Allegheny St., was westbound on East Division Street at 4:50 p.m. Sunday at  high speed and apparently lost control of his vehicle, striking a parked vehicle belonging to John W. Buchanan Jr., 70, 410 1/2 E. Division St. That caused Buchanan’s vehicle to strike the parked car of Bethanie Smith, 25, 410 E. Division St. Police said Threats, who reported minor injury, was cited for careless driving.

SHENANGO TOWNSHIP

•Accident. Police said Thomas Fontana went over an embankment on Ellwood Road near Shenango Stop Road about 5:35 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.

    Police have charged four people arrested during a drug raid Wednesday in Union Township. Members of the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force executed a sealed search warrant at 27 Spring St. All four suspects live at that address, according to court records.

    A New Castle man who hit a tree in Pulaski Township has been admitted to St. Elizabeth Health Center. According to Pulaski Township police, Adam Welsh, 36, of 202 E. Fairmont Ave., was eastbound on Route 422 about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when his pickup truck left the road.

  • East Side garage ‘total loss’ in fire

    The New Castle police department fire investigator was called for a blaze at a garage. The three-bay garage at 626 Superior St. was a total loss, according to New Castle firefighters, who were called about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday. They remained at the scene until nearly 3 a.m.

  • Barletto.jpg Hearings in fatal crashes are postponed

    A hearing for the woman accused of striking a police cruiser and killing a Shenango Township officer has been rescheduled. Kylee Gwen Barletto, 26, of 693 Hoover Road, will face a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. June 6. It had been scheduled for Thursday morning.

  • Shenango man accused of breaking into car

    A Shenango man was arrested after he allegedly was caught breaking into a car on New Castle’s East Side. New Castle police charged Jessie Lauderbaugh, 23, of Highview Drive with fleeing from police, theft from a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct and loitering and prowling at night.

    Four people were arrested and drugs and a gun were confiscated Wednesday when police raided a house in Union Township. Union Township police, with the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force and New Castle police special response team and narcotics unit, served a sealed search warrant at 27 Spring St. just before 6:30 a.m.

    New Castle police have arrested a South Side man for his alleged role in a convenience store burglary. Alex John Benkosky, 21, of 821 S. Mercer St., is accused as an accomplice in the March 26 break-in at the Country Fair on Croton Avenue.

  • Man accused of cutting woman

    A New Castle man is accused of allegedly assaulting a Crestview Gardens woman. Police said Dajoi Taylor, 19, of 509 W. North St. allegedly hit an 18-year-old woman in the cheek with a purple eyebrow razor and pulled the weave out of her hair during an encounter around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
