NEW CASTLE —
A homeless man has been arrested for allegedly getting in the way of efforts to fight a dumpster fire.
New Castle police have charged Richard Kohlmetz, 45, with resisting arrest, simple assault and public drunkenness.
Police said the fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday behind the Dollar General store on Moravia Street.
Officers arrived to find Kohlmetz was not letting firefighters put out the fire, and that he was lying on the ground next to a fire truck that was on scene.
City firefighters told police that Kohlmetz would not move and he was trying to hinder fire personnel from going near the blaze by standing in their way and shouting obscenities at them.
As officers tried to arrest him, he threatened them and raised his fist at them, telling them not to touch him.
Kohlmetz refused to cooperate and police forced him to lie on his stomach. He then he put his hands and arms under his chest to prevent them from handcuffing him. After a struggle police arrested him.
He was placed in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.
