Woman accused in officer’s death waives extradition

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle woman accused in the death of a Shenango Township policeman will return to Lawrence County next week.

The attorney for Kylee Barletto, 25, of 693 Hoover Road, waived her extradition hearing Thursday in Youngstown.

According to Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa, Barletto, who is charged with homicide by vehicle and 14 other counts in the May 2 death of William J. McCarthy IV, will be transferred back to Lawrence County Monday.

Barletto is accused of driving the vehicle that struck the police cruiser McCarthy was in on Cascade Street in New Castle that night. She was injured in the crash, as was the driver of the cruiser, Shenango officer Michael Lynch.

Following the crash, Barletto was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Because she was across state lines, Lamancusa had to make an extradition request to have Barletto returned to Lawrence County.

Once she is brought back to the county, Lamancusa said, she will be arraigned by District Judge Jerry Cartwright in Ellwood City, where state police filed the criminal complaint against her.

At that point, bond will be determined.

Barletto is being represented by James Ecker, a Pittsburgh attorney.
