NEW CASTLE —
A 12-year-old boy injured after crashing a minibike into a truck has been released from Children’s Hospital.
Union Township police declined to release the child’s name, but said they learned the boy suffered a minor concussion but no broken bones.
“He’s doing well,” the officer said.
According to police, the boy, riding his brother’s electric minibike, was southbound on Smithfield Street at 3:45 p.m. Saturday when he shot out and hit the door of a truck driven by Timothy Quigley, 39, no address provided. The truck was eastbound on Sunny Avenue.
The boy, traveling about 15 to 20 miles per hour, failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection, police said.
When he arrived at the scene, the officer said, the boy was bleeding from the mouth, and the decision was made to fly him to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The bike belonged to the rider’s 10-year-old brother, who received it as a Christmas present. Police were told that the brothers and a friend had been playing with the bike, driving it through their snow-covered yard for most of the day.
The officer said the boys’ mother was surprised to learn that the vehicle is not allowed on the road.
“It’s not piston or gasoline powered, but it is electric,” the officer said. “It’s not even allowed on sidewalks.”
He added that the vehicle also requires adult supervision when being used.
“His mother and grandmother didn’t know where he was,” the officer said. “They thought he was with the other two playing video games. They were about to sit down to supper when the witness came knocking on their door telling them that their son had been in a traffic accident about 70 yards down the road.”
He said the bike sustained minor damage to its handle bars.

The Lawrence County jail received a bomb threat over the weekend. New Castle police reported a call was received at 7:40 p.m. Saturday from a man who said he “was coming up to blow up the jail.”

Child says man tried to kidnap him
A 6-year-old playing in his yard Saturday night said a man tried to abduct him. Pennsylvania State Police said the child, playing on his swing set on Line Street, Perry Township, about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, was approached by a blond, bearded, tattooed man who tried to talk to him.
