NEW CASTLE —
A Volant woman died after an accident in Mercer County that also injured her husband.
Police said Frank E. and Shirley Telesz, both 79, of 278 Young Road, were southbound on Route 18 when their car crossed into the northbound lane and ended up 100 feet off the road in a ditch with the passenger side pinned.
Police said the accident, about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, occurred near Hewitt Road in Shenango Township.
Frank Telesz, who had been driving, was out of the car and disoriented when Southwest Mercer County Regional Police arrived, according to officers.
The Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department pulled Shirley Telesz out of the driver’s side of the car after they found her trapped.
Police said the couple likely had been wearing seat belts because the windshield was not broken.
They were taken by ambulance to Horizon Hospital, Farrell, both complaining of chest-related injuries, according to police. Mercer County 911 dispatch said both were flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
At 12:12 a.m. yesterday, police said, they were notified by a representative of the Pittsburgh Medical Examiner’s Office that Shirley Telesz had died from the chest injuries caused by the accident.
Information about Frank Telesz was not available last night. A spokeswoman for Presbyterian Hospital said the facility had no record of him.
