Witness reports possible student abduction

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police investigated a possible attempted abduction of a girl at her bus stop.

A witness at the Lower East Side bus stop reported the incident to the girl’s mother and police.

He reported that around 8:30 a.m. Thursday — while the grade-school-age girl was sitting on the curb waiting for the bus — a black Jeep Wrangler with no top was driving down Oak Street toward East Washington Street when it stopped near the girl.

As the witness walked toward the Jeep, it sped away and did not stop for a stop sign. He gave a description of the driver to the police.

An officer later interviewed the girl, who said a man wearing black glasses stopped and asked her if she needed a ride to school.

Before she could answer, the Jeep took off, she told police. She said she does not know the man in the Jeep.
