Hearing on Ellwood shooting postponed

NEW CASTLE — The hearing for an Ellwood City resident charged with shooting a man outside a bar has been postponed.

The hearing for Ian Christopher Frey, 25, of McKim Way, is now scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.

Frey was charged with criminal homicide, murder in the first degree, following the shooting death of Keith Knox of Wampum. He remains in the Lawrence County jail where he is being held without bond.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the hearing delay was requested by defense attorney Paul Gettleman of Portersville.

According to Ellwood City police, Knox was shot just before 2 a.m. Nov. 17 in a North Street parking lot. Officers said the men had been involved in an altercation in a bar across the street.

Frey told police he had gotten into his car to drive away but Knox approached his vehicle and attacked him.

Officers said as the two fought, Frey shot Knox three times in the torso. Knox died at the scene. Frey claims he acted in self-defense.
