Police: Reports for Jan. 10

NEW CASTLE — SHENANGO TOWNSHIP

•Burglary. Someone broke into a home on Rose Stop Road Monday and broke the screens on two televisions. Police said their investigation is continuing.

•Driving under the influence. Police said they stopped a vehicle at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of East Washington Street and Schenley Avenue for traffic violations. They said the driver, Caleb Daniel Rider, 22, of 709 Line Ave., Ellwood City, was under the influence and subsequently arrested. They also said he had a small amount of marijuana in his possession.

•Retail theft. Police were called to Kmart at Lawrence Village Plaza about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, where security had detained Jennifer DeSalvo, 35, of 1144 Parkwood Court for allegedly concealing $66.96 worth of merchandise in her purse. DeSalvo was taken into custody and police said when they searched her, they also found drug paraphernalia. She was charged with retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

NEW CASTLE

•Accident. Police said Patricia Iwanejko, 69, of Volant was walking across Wilmington Avenue at Leasure Avenue around 1 p.m. Tuesday and Nicholas Klein, 22, of Hazelcroft Avenue, was turning from Leasure Avenue south onto Wilmington Road in his sport utility vehicle and hit her. Klein told police he didn’t see Iwankejo, and she told police she didn’t see his vehicle. She was treated for minor injuries at Jameson Hospital, police said. No other injuries were reported.

•Criminal mischief. The driver’s side window of a sport utility vehicle was broken between 7 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday while it was parked in the 400 block of Neal Street. The inside was ransacked, police said.

•Theft. A purse was stolen from a car parked in a lot in the 100 block of Long Avenue between 7 and 8 p.m. Dec. 20.

•Accident. Ruth McEvoy, 70, of 1525 Young Road, drove over the sidewalk at Dollar General on Butler Avenue and hit the ice machine next to the building around 4:30 p.m. Monday, police said. The machine had minor damage.

  • Robbery charges withdrawn

    Charges against Justin Anthony Barry, who was accused in a robbery, have been withdrawn. New Castle police had arrested Barry, 25, of Apt. F, 1214 Highland Ave., earlier this month and charged him with robbery, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, theft and receiving stolen property.

  • gavel.jpg Three more plead guilty in oxycodone ring

    Three more New Castle residents pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of violating the federal drug laws.
    Christopher Klingensmith, 38, of Vine Street, James Cracraft, 39, of Randolph Street and Thomas Klingensmith Jr., 40, of Bellair Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy before U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab.
    U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton made the announcement Tuesday.

  • police.jpg South Side man faces gun, drug charges

    A South Side man was arrested on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop on the city’s North Hill. Martel Lamar Webb, 19, of 199 Hamilton St. had been wanted by police on charges in a domestic assault case in May when police caught up with him.

  • police.jpg Woman charged for assaulting 1-year-old

    A New Castle woman was arrested and charged with the assault of a year-old child in Scott Township. Nicole Martin, 26, of New Castle was arraigned before District Judge David Rishel on a charge of simple assault. She was lodged in the Lawrence County jail on $1,000 bond.

    The Lawrence County jail received a bomb threat over the weekend. New Castle police reported a call was received at 7:40 p.m. Saturday from a man who said he “was coming up to blow up the jail.”

    A 6-year-old playing in his yard Saturday night said a man tried to abduct him. Pennsylvania State Police said the child, playing on his swing set on Line Street, Perry Township, about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, was approached by a blond, bearded, tattooed man who tried to talk to him.

    Narcotics officers arrested two men and seized heroin in a raid of a house on New Castle’s East Side. New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said city police and Lawrence County District Attorney’s detectives served a sealed search warrant at Apartment D, 502 Florence Ave., around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

    New Castle police are investigating a reported drug overdose of a woman found in a car on the city’s West Side. The woman, 29-year-old Misty Blu McKim of Youngstown, was reported to have been in cardiac arrest and had two children in car seats in the back of the car.
