NEW CASTLE —
An East Side couple was cited after two children fell out of their car.
James E. and Angela A. Guyer, both 42 and both of 118 Richlieu Ave. each were cited with two counts of endangering the welfare of children.
Shenango Township police said the couple was at the traffic light pulling from Lawrence Village Plaza left onto Ellwood Road at 1:30 p.m. Friday when the rear passenger side door opened and two children fell from the moving vehicle.
The officer said he saw the two victims sitting on the front passenger seat of the vehicle, each with minor cuts and abrasions.
He said he also observed two other children in the back seat. One child was in a rear-facing car seat in the center of the back seat and the other child was in a booster seat behind the driver’s seat. The officer said he did not observe any type of booster seat behind the passenger seat where the two victims had been sitting.
The officer said he asked why there had been four children — all under age 8 — in the back seat but not enough restraint belts or child safety seats.
Police said Angela Guyer told him they were “only going to Big Lots,” and that the girls’ parents had not provided child safety seats. The two girls, she said, were secured in a single restraint belt.
As the ambulance crew checked the two girls for further injuries, the officer said, each of the girls’ mothers arrived on the scene with a proper booster seat. The mothers told police they had not known the Guyers did not have enough booster seats.
The girls were released to their mothers and the Guyers were told they would receive citations in the mail.
