Farm fire ‘could have been much worse’

NEW CASTLE — The fire at Deerfield Farms in Washington Township could have been much worse, according to Volant Fire Chief Jeff Parish.

Concern that liquid fertilizer stored at the farm on Black Road would be ignited resulted in responses from eight volunteer fire departments in Lawrence and Mercer counties.

“We needed a lot (of responders) because that is a rural area and we needed to haul in water,” Parish said. Firefighters were called at 5:20 p.m. Monday when a wall of a building caught fire.

Parish said the blaze was confined to the interior wall of the garage workshop.

“Given the amount of fertilizer stored there and the size of the storage facility, it could have been much worse,” Parish said, adding, “Due to the way the garage was built, the walls and roof prevented it from spreading to the fertilizer storage area.”

He said he did not have a damage estimate but noted there was smoke and fire damage to the inside wall.

He added the fire marshal was not summoned.

“We were told they were cutting with a torch and a spark ignited the wall,” he said. “There was no mystery about how the fire started.”

Responding were departments from Scott, Neshannock and Hickory townships and New Wilmington and Volant boroughs in Lawrence County and East End and Springfield Township in Mercer County.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 fell from the sky in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard. Many are speculating that Russian rebels (supported by Vladimir Putin) are responsible for downing the aircraft. What do you think?

Yes. All evidence points that way.
No. Everyone is so quick to point fingers, but there's not enough evidence to support claims of Russian guilt.
I'm not sure. I'll just wait until the investigation is over to make up my mind.
What is up with these Malaysian Airlines planes? I know one airline I won't be flying any time soon...
