Lady ’Canes’ standout has torn ACL

NEW CASTLE — New Castle High girls basketball star Kaylynn Waters got the news she was waiting to hear on Friday morning.

But it was not what she had hoped for.

During a doctor’s appointment on Friday morning, the star senior guard learned she has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

She had an MRI done Thursday on the knee, which she injured Tuesday in a game against Vincentian Academy. Waters, who was leading Lawrence County in scoring at 25.5 points per game, was driving to the basket and planted her foot when her right knee buckled. She crumbled to the floor and laid there for nearly 15 minutes before leaving the court.

Waters is just a year removed from tearing her left ACL. That injury happened in the fourth game last year and she missed the rest of the season.

She is expected to have surgery in about three weeks.

Sports writer Ron Poniewasz Jr. is working on this developing story and will have complete details in Saturday’s edition of The News.
