Courtney Caughey-Stambul: Movie adaptions of Stephen King's works are a must-see

NEW CASTLE —

Happy New Year!
In my first movie post a few weeks ago, I quoted Stephen King. I am a fan of his work.
As you probably know many of his short stories and novels have been turned into very successful films. I've decided to compose another top 10 list this week- my top 10 films based on the writings of Stephen King.
10. The Shining (1980)
Interestingly enough, Stephen King himself had some doubts about this film adaptation. He even had a few disagreements with director, Stanley Kubrick. If you get the chance, I recommend watching TCM's "Night at the Movies" with Stephen King.
9. Carrie (1976)
8. Misery (1990)
This is Kathy Bates at her very best. The promotional photo for this film, featuring Bates holding a large knife, says it all. This is a must-see for thriller/horror fans.
7. The Green Mile (1999)
6. The Mist (2007)
5. Pet Sematary (1989)
This film gives me the creeps, as I'm sure it's meant to.
4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. Children of the Corn (1984)
2. Stand By Me (1986)
"Stand By Me" is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love coming-of-age stories. If you're also a fan of this film, I recommend checking out the movie, "Now and Then," as well.
1. Secret Window (2004)
This, too, is one of my favorite movies of all time. The image of Mort Rainey, eating his corn-on-the-cob, is forever embedded into my memory.

Hello and happy Wednesday to you! We're halfway through the week. Thank goodness! Yesterday, a friend asked me who was my favorite actor. I've been thinking quite a bit about my answer over the past day. If I had to choose, I would say Johnny Depp.

I stood in line at the movie theater on Friday night, waiting to see "Oz the Great and Powerful" in 3-D. It was the first time in a very long time that I actually had to wait in line to see a film. As I waited, the crowd and a life-sized poster of a wicked witch, her face slightly shadowed, added to my excitement leading up to the start of this movie.

I love when film critics, entertainment companies, movie sites — whomever — produce lists of their favorite all-time movies. I use MSN Entertainment to look up movie times online. The other day I was checking the site to see which theater in Boardman was going to show "Oz The Great and Powerful."

Each year, the National Film Registry adds up to 25 films to its list for possible preservation. Films chosen are not meant to represent the greatest American movies of all time, but rather are meant to represent films that have made an impact on our culture.
