NEW CASTLE —
Every year, my fiancé and I go out to eat on New Year's Eve.
After we eat, we usually get some cheese and crackers and a movie to ring in the new year. Tired of cheese and crackers, today I spent some time looking for alternative snacks online. I came across a page that had a few snack ideas for New Year's Eve celebrations, but just for kids.
So why not spend the last night of the year together as a family, enjoying some really fun and unique foods?
Check out the recipes for Winter Snowballs, Sparkling Fruit Sundaes, Pink Champagne Punch and Confetti Popcorn Balls at http://www.familycorner.com/family/kids/recipes/new_years_eve.shtml.
If you're looking for something more "serious" to eat this New Year's Eve, how about Mini Cucumber Sandwiches or Cheesecake-stuffed Strawberries?
View the recipe for Mini Cucumber Sandwiches at http://www.familycorner.com/family/food/inthekitchen/mini-cucumber-sandwiches-appetizers.shtml.

The site says this recipe is best for use during the summer, but I can't begin to think of a reason that cheesecake-stuffed strawberries wouldn't be perfect for any time of year. Besides, I saw a ton of packages of great-looking strawberries in Giant Eagle just yesterday.
So, have a toast with your Pink Champagne Punch tonight, say goodbye to 2011 and welcome a brand new year.
My best wishes to you and your family in 2012!

Courtney Caughey: Getting sloppy in the kitchen
Last night for dinner I had a Sloppy Joe sandwich. The Sloppy Joe is one of my favorite meals because it is so easy to make. Curious about ways to jazz up my old Sloppy Joe recipe of lean ground beef and Manwich, I took to Google. What did I ever do before Google?!?

Courtney Caughey: The magic of microwave cooking
On Sunday, a friend and I stopped by the Angels for Animals yard sale in Canfield, Ohio. As I was browsing the items, I noticed a thin book called, "Microwave Cooking Guide." Its cover was worn and it looked as if it had seen some use in its day, so for fun, I purchased it.

Courtney Caughey: Try something new for breakfast this week
So, I don't know much about veganism, but I came across the blog of Angela Liddon when I was searching the web for posts on running. I completed my first 5k race on March 17 and will be competing in my next race on May 5, but that's besides the point.

Courtney Caughey: All about ham!
Starting many years ago before refrigeration, pork would be cured for spring, and hams would be ready right around Easter. Thus, ham is often still today the centerpiece of many Easter dinners. From the day of preparation to the week of leftovers, here are some ideas for preparing your ham dish this holiday.

Courtney Caughey: Mash it up with a quick fix side dish
So, this week I am taking a break from Easter recipes to talk about a quick-fix side dish. Last night, I tried Ore Ida's Steam n' Mash red potatoes. I needed something to accompany the pork chops I was making and when I saw the potatoes in the freezer section, I was quite intrigued.

Courtney Caughey: A hot potato recipe for Easter
Potatoes can be prepared in a million different ways. I have chosen to make scalloped potatoes for my Easter dinner. There is a wide variety of scalloped potato recipes on the web. You can make the side dish with cheese, with onion, with ham, with practically anything.

Courtney Caughey: Some more Easter dishes for you ...
Continuing on with my Easter dinner recipes, today I will introduce the candied carrots and lite coconut cake. Candied carrots seem like they belong on the Easter table. I mean, we all know the Easter Bunny, and we all know that bunnies like carrots, so it's just right.
