You can expect substantial work at I-79-Route 422 interchange
A project to replace I-79 bridges that cross Route 422 will begin Monday. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the $14 million project in Butler County also will include reconstructing ramps, new signs and an Intelligent Transportation System installation (a traffic monitoring camera and three digital message signs).

City homeowners can get free smoke detectors
The New Castle fire department has provided free smoke detectors to approximately 100 homes this year. Fire Chief Tom Maciarello said Thursday the department began furnishing the detectors to homeowners about a week and a half ago.

Red Cross offers lifesaving courses
Each year, more than 5 million people learn how to save a life by taking American Red Cross preparedness courses. This month, the organization is encouraging Lawrence County to join these growing ranks by taking a class.

Seminar to offer veteran assistance
A seminar for veterans Friday will look at assistive technology. The session — from 2 to 4 p.m. — will be in the commissioners meeting room at the Lawrence County courthouse.

Manure management topic of workshop
All farms generating or using manure must develop and implement a manure management plan. The revised Department of Environmental Protection Manure Management Manual, released in October 2011, requires that of every farm in Pennsylvania that produces or applies manure.

Your Health: Surgeon to discuss hip, knee replacement
Orthopedic surgeon Robert McGann will give a free presentation on the benefits of a new hip and knee material. McGann, a doctor with Lawrence County Orthopedics, will be discussing the Smith and Nephew 30-year Verilast hip and knee. The session will begin at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at AIR Physical Therapy and Fitness, 1807 Mercer Road, Ellwood City.

Charter school plan to be discussed
New Castle Arts Academy Charter School will have a public meet-and-greet session Thursday. The program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Copernicus Room at the New Castle Public Library.

Fracking alliance meets Tuesday
Fracking Truth Alliance of Lawrence and Mercer Counties will have a public meeting Tuesday. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Westminster College Field Station, 937 Fayette-New Wilmington Road.

The Wampum Chapter of the North Country Trail will have its monthly meeting Monday. The group will gather at Hito’s Restaurant in West Pittsburg. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
