Mahoning Township to conduct cleanup

NEW CASTLE — Mahoning Township has scheduled a spring cleanup for this month.

Items will be picked up during the weeks of May 6 and 13.

Residents are to place all items at curbside on the day before their scheduled collection only. Residents of all mobile home parks must place their items at the entrances to the park. The crews will not enter the mobile home parks.

Items should be packed neatly in bags or bundles and cannot be longer than 10 feet.

The following items will not be accepted: plate glass, perishables or other garbage, batteries, tires, paint cans or large amounts of wood. Refrigerators and air conditions will not be accepted unless the Freon has been professionally removed and the item has been tagged.

Following is the schedule for pickups:

•May 6 — Hillsville (East and West Main streets, Churchill Road to Bessemer-Hillsville Road, Rich Avenue, Carbon area, West State Street east from the Ohio line to Churchill Road, including Quaker Heights.

•May 7 — Overlook Drive, Francis Drive, Churchill Road to the river, West State Street from Churchill east, Rachal Road, Carbon-Micco Road, Arena Road, Hilltop Estates and Butch Estates.

•May 8 — Miller Farm Road, Mohawk School Road, Edinburg, North Edinburg Road south, Countryside Mobile Home Park, West State Street east of Hilltop Estates.

•May 9 — North Edinburg, the eastern section of the township including Benjamin Franklin Highway, the Harbor, Sankey Run Road, North Edinburg Road north, Twilight Mobile Home Park and Devite Mobile Home Park.

•May 10 — Zoccoli Mobile Home Park, North Edinburg Road north to the township line, Mathews Road, Denny Drive, Garner Road, Five Points Road, Zoccoli Road, Palmer Road.

•May 13 — Ambrosia Road, Skyhill Road west to Hillsville Road, Baird Road, Hillsville Road, Coffee Run Road.

•May 14 — Evergreen Road, Skyhill Road from Hillsville Road west, Butch Circle, McBride Road, Carlisle Road.

•May 15 — Erskine Quarry Road, Graham Road, River Road, Jacobson Road.

    A veterans health fair has been scheduled for Friday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lower level of the Lawrence County courthouse.

  • Fundraiser set for canine vests

    A Night at the Races has been set to raise money for equipping local police dogs with protective vests. Organizers said the effort was inspired by January’s death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh canine officer who was fatally stabbed by a suspect police were arresting.

    New Castle will have the opportunity to celebrate its championship basketball team once again this week. The city and school district are co-hosting a downtown parade Thursday in honor of New Castle High’s Red Hurricane basketball team.

  • Red Cross offers gift with blood donation

    The American Red Cross is offering a gift to people who donate blood this week. While supplies last, donors will receive a Red Cross tote bag as part of the Red Cross Month observation in March.
