County conservation district to host manure workshops

NEW CASTLE — The Lawrence County Conservation District will conduct two workshops — in February and March — on manure management.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s revised manure management manual, released in October 2011, requires every farm in Pennsylvania that produces or applies manure to develop and implement a written manure management plan.

The purpose of the local workshops is to help producers learn the new regulations and to write a plan.

The first workshop will be 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 26. The second will be 9 a.m. to noon March 6. Both workshops will be at the Lawrence County Conservation District office in the Lawrence County Government Center, 430 Court St.

The primary purpose of these workshops is to guide participants through the process of completing the manure management plan for their farm. Topics covered by the workshop will include agricultural plans, the revised manure management manual, and the Pennsylvania OneStop mapping program.

Space is limited for both workshops.

To attend the Feb. 26 workshop, registration is required by Feb. 21. To attend the March 6 workshop, participants must register by March 3. All attendees will receive a copy of the updated manure management manual and a free soil test kit.

In addition, continuing education credits are available. Three credits are available to nutrient management specialists, three credits are available for manure haulers/brokers and five credits are available for private and core pesticide licenses.

Contact the Lawrence County Conservation District at (724) 656-2474 to register by phone or contact the office by email at lcdresourcetech1@gmail.com with name, address, phone number and number of people attending.

Financial support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection through the Clean Water Fund.
