NEW CASTLE —
Gaston Park is the first target of the Clean and Green section of New Visions for Lawrence County.
Clean and Green team members and volunteers will be meeting Saturday at the main entrance to the park on Wilson Avenue for a cleanup.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and work will continue until about noon.
Melissa Barnes, who is leading the Clean and Green team, recommends those who are participating wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants as well as thick-soled shoes.
Gloves and trash bags will be provided, along with pizza and drinks for the volunteers.
Calling Gaston Park “a beautiful natural resource within our community” Barnes noted it is a great place for children to play, for families to gather or for anyone to enjoy a peaceful walk.”
She urged community residents — whether they are neighbors of the park or just interested in improving the city — to pitch in on Saturday.
“Let’s all come out to help bring out the beauty of this treasure in our community.”
Barnes stressed “this is just the beginning of the efforts at Gaston,” and only the first step in the process to improve New Castle’s appearance.
She explained the Clean and Green team will be looking at other things that can be done to enhance the natural beauty of the park. For instance, there are plans to plant daffodil bulbs there. According to Barnes, about 100 daffodil bulbs have been collected, but the team is looking for donations of more bulbs.
In addition to the cleanup at Gaston, the team intends to conduct other cleanups and is working on plans for community gardens and other projects.

Workshop to review green building efforts

Mixer planned to meet candidates for primary
The Lawrence County Young Republicans will have a meet-the-candidates mixer in anticipation of the May 21 primary. The session will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the Crane Room, 3009 Wilmington Road.
