NEW CASTLE —
The American Red Cross is changing is relocating its regular blood donation center in New Castle.
With the new location, blood collections in New Castle also will take place on a new day.
The site will now be at the First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Jefferson St., starting Oct. 10.
The donation site has been at Trinity Episcopal Church at the corner of Falls and Mill streets.
Starting next week, the collections will be conducted on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month.
In the past, they have been on Tuesdays.
The site’s hours of operation will be noon to 6 p.m.
According to Marianne Spampinato, communications manager, Greater Alleghenies Region of the American Red Cross, the First Presbyterian Church site is more centrally located for area residents and offers improved parking for donors, volunteers and Red Cross staff than the Trinity Episcopal Church site.
“We are grateful to the staff and membership of Trinity Episcopal Church for their generous sponsorship of our New Castle donor center for many years,” Spampinato said. “We are continually looking at how we can improve blood donation convenience and access and believe this change will be a good one for donors.”
She added that to help welcome donors to the First Presbyterian Church site, presenting donors will receive a Red Cross T-shirt on Oct. 10 and 24, while supplies last.
Donation appointments are encouraged, and individuals may schedule online at www.redcrossblood.org or by calling (800) 733-2767.
Anyone who is 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), weighs at least 110 pounds based on height, and is in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Individuals should take their Red Cross blood donor cards or other form of ID when they donate.
Those with specific eligibility questions may call the Red Cross donor client support center at (866) 236-3276.
Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
The Greater Alleghenies Region directly serves hospitals, patients and donors in a 100-county area in Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, with more than five-dozen blood products and related services. It also supports blood needs experienced by patients elsewhere in hospitals served through Red Cross Blood Services.

Session scheduled to assist veterans
A department service officer from the American Legion will visit New Castle Thursday. The officer will be available to answer questions from veterans regarding state and federal benefits.

Route 551 bridge reopens to traffic
The new bridge that carries Route 551 over a branch of Little Beaver Creek in Little Beaver Township is open. The bridge and road have been closed since Jan. 7.

Mixer planned to meet candidates for primary
The Lawrence County Young Republicans will have a meet-the-candidates mixer in anticipation of the May 21 primary. The session will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the Crane Room, 3009 Wilmington Road.
