NEW CASTLE — Penn State Extension in Lawrence County is now accepting applications for the Master Gardener Program.

Master gardeners are volunteers who support Penn State Extension’s educational programs in consumer horticulture. They develop their horticultural expertise through participation in education al programs designed to provide experienced home gardeners with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and knowledge with others.

Weekly instruction is provided, for a fee, by Penn State Extension educators. In exchange for their initial 54 hours of formal instruction, participants must agree to provide a minimum of 50 hours to the Penn State Master Gardener Program.

Anyone interested in becoming a master gardener may contact the extension office at (724) 654-8370 for an application packet.

There will be an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at the extension office at the county government center. Completed applications will be accepted at that meeting.

An orientation/interview meeting will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sept. 12, also at the extension office. Information about the program will be distributed and participants will complete a test to determine their horticultural background.

Classes will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the extension office.
