NEW CASTLE —
A meeting will be held at Villa Maria on Tuesday to discuss a proposed reduction in its post office hours.
The U.S. Postal Service will conduct the meeting set for 4:30 p.m. at Villa Maria’s conference center, 225 Villa Maria Road. The manager of postal operations for the area will attend the meeting, according to Tad Kelley, spokesman for the postal service in western Pennsylvania.
The postal service has proposed the number of hours be reduced from eight to four.
Villa Maria’s post office is one of eight rural post offices in Lawrence County that could see reduced hours.
People attending Tuesday’s meeting will be given a customized informational handout detailing the results of a survey conducted for the community by the postal service. All information received from the survey and comments made at the meeting will be taken into account to make the decisions regarding the status of the post office.
The proposed reduction in hours is referred to as the POST Plan, which has been established to keep small post offices open if a community desires, Kelley said.
The proposal is part of the postal service’s overall plan to cut costs. The plan would affect 13,000 post offices nationwide and would take about two years to implement.
The other offices in the county being considered for reduced hours are in Edinburg, Enon Valley, Hillsville, New Bedford, Pulaski, Wampum and West Pittsburg. Community meetings for those offices have yet to be scheduled.
