Veterans program offers fitness classes

NEW CASTLE — VA Butler’s Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Program now offers free, veteran fitness classes five days a week.

The classes are 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the VA Butler Healthcare Auditorium, first floor, Building 1, 325 New Castle Road, Butler.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes are cardio-based, Tuesday classes are yoga and Thursday classes are Zumba.

The program focuses on ways veterans can live healthier lives, including through physical activity.

    New Castle High School’s class of 1950 is planning a reunion for May 3. There will be a buffet luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Crane Room, 3009 Wilmington Road.

    A veterans health fair has been scheduled for Friday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lower level of the Lawrence County courthouse.

  • Fundraiser set for canine vests

    A Night at the Races has been set to raise money for equipping local police dogs with protective vests. Organizers said the effort was inspired by January’s death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh canine officer who was fatally stabbed by a suspect police were arresting.

    New Castle will have the opportunity to celebrate its championship basketball team once again this week. The city and school district are co-hosting a downtown parade Thursday in honor of New Castle High’s Red Hurricane basketball team.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
