Comcast Cares event to aid I Care House

NEW CASTLE — Local Comcast employees, their families and friends will be volunteering their time and efforts Saturday.

They will be working at the Cray Youth and Family Services’ I Care House and adjacent community garden and park in New Castle as part of Comcast Cares Day.

At the same time across the country, more than 67,000 Comcast volunteers will participate in this annual day of service, which is one of the largest single days of corporate volunteer efforts in the country.

Over the previous 10 “Comcast Cares Days,” volunteers have dedicated more than 2.1 million hours of service. The company has also contributed more than $10.5 million in grants to organizations nationwide.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Comcast volunteers will meet at the I Care House, 602 Court St. before beginning cleaning activities. Cray Youth and Family Services is assuming ownership of the house with plans to use it for community development efforts.

Across Court Street is the community garden and park, where volunteers will be mulching, painting and preparing the garden area. A representative from the Penn State Extension Service will be present with plants for the garden and advice on how to care for them.

The grant associated with this project also will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lawrence County.
