Education chief to speak at annual chamber dinner

NEW CASTLE — The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will have its annual dinner March 12.

The event, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, will feature Carolyn Dumaresq, Pennsylvania’s acting secretary of education, as the keynote speaker.

Dumaresq was appointed by Gov. Tom Corbett to serve as secretary of education on Aug. 26.

This year’s dinner theme is “Education 2.0: Meeting the Challenge.”

The social hour is 5 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6. The cost to attend is $65 per person or $650 for a table of 10.

    New Castle High School’s class of 1950 is planning a reunion for May 3. There will be a buffet luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Crane Room, 3009 Wilmington Road.

  • Fundraiser set for canine vests

    A Night at the Races has been set to raise money for equipping local police dogs with protective vests. Organizers said the effort was inspired by January’s death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh canine officer who was fatally stabbed by a suspect police were arresting.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed “unprecedented” legislation yesterday to expand gun rights in his state. Good idea?

Yes. Expanding the scope of where people can carry guns can help halt violent crimes and make those places safer.
No. Carrying guns into bars and schools is NEVER a good idea. I think it will lead to more violence.
Not sure, but I don’t plan to visit Georgia any time soon.
