Fundraiser set for canine vests

NEW CASTLE — A Night at the Races has been set to raise money for equipping local police dogs with protective vests.

Organizers said the effort was inspired by January’s death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh canine officer who was fatally stabbed by a suspect police were arresting.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. April 26 at St. John’s Hall, 725 Pearson St. Races will start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance and are available at the Shenango Police Department or by calling Margie at (724) 651-7198.

The tickets include admission, food and beverage. A Chinese auction and other games also will take place at the event. No tickets will be sold at the door.

A spokeswoman said proceeds will be used for armor vests and any other equipment the canine officers need. She said the vests run at least $1,000 each and that five or six police departments in Lawrence County have police dogs.

Have you held or will you hold a garage/yard sale this year?

I have and it was a success! It's a great way to get rid of some junk and make a little extra pocket money.
I have, but it didn't go over so well. Better luck next time?
I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I haven't and I don't plan to. It's not for me.
