Women’s conference set

NEW CASTLE — U.S. Rep. Keith Rothfus is sponsoring a women’s conference on work, home and life on Saturday.

The conference is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon at the Community College of Allegheny County, North Campus, 8701 Perry Highway.

The conference will feature panelists specializing in various fields. An FBI special agent, for example, will speak on Internet safety: Protecting your children.

Other subjects to be discussed include starting a business, saving for college, stress management and healthy eating tips and nutrition.

U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri will be the keynote speaker.

There is no charge to attend the conference, which is open to the public.

    A veterans health fair has been scheduled for Friday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lower level of the Lawrence County courthouse.

  • Fundraiser set for canine vests

    A Night at the Races has been set to raise money for equipping local police dogs with protective vests. Organizers said the effort was inspired by January’s death of Rocco, a Pittsburgh canine officer who was fatally stabbed by a suspect police were arresting.

    New Castle will have the opportunity to celebrate its championship basketball team once again this week. The city and school district are co-hosting a downtown parade Thursday in honor of New Castle High’s Red Hurricane basketball team.

  • Red Cross offers gift with blood donation

    The American Red Cross is offering a gift to people who donate blood this week. While supplies last, donors will receive a Red Cross tote bag as part of the Red Cross Month observation in March.

Milwaukee catcher Martin Maldonado has been suspended five games for sucker punching Pittsburgh’s Travis Snider during a bench clearing brawl on Sunday. You OK with that suspension?

Yes. Seems fair.
No. Baseball NEVER gets it right in these situations. Should have been at least 20 games for his sucker punch into a pile of players.
Not sure, but I’d love to see baseball be like hockey and allow two guys to fight for a while before breaking it up. Let’s see how tough Maldonado is then.
