NEW CASTLE —
Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Leslie Sabo will be the focus of Wednesday’s Lawrence County Historical Society meeting.
Eric Poole, author of “Forgotten Honor” will be the guest speaker at the November veterans remembrance program. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence County Historical Society, 408 N. Jefferson St.
Poole, a newspaper reporter, lives in Ellwood City. His book will be available for purchase.
On May 10, 1970, Sgt. Leslie Sabo Jr. of Ellwood City was killed in Cambodia during the Vietnam War. His fellow soldiers immediately recommended him for the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest decoration for combat valor. However, the records of his heroism were lost for nearly 30 years in a bureaucratic snafu that kept even his friends and family back home from knowing of Sabo’s courageous acts.
This year, the United States bestowed the Medal of Honor on this long-forgotten hero — 42 years after his death.
More information is available by calling the historical society at (724) 658-4022.
