NEW CASTLE — Tuesday, Oct. 9 is the deadline for Pennsylvania residents to register to vote in next month’s election.

Lawrence County residents who are not registered have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to register at the courthouse.

Voter registration applications by mail must be postmarked no later than Tuesday.

Tuesday is also the deadline for registered voters to change their party affiliation before the Nov. 6 election that features races for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, three statewide offices and most seats in the state Legislature.

The deadline for registered voters to apply for an absentee ballot for the election is Oct. 30.

Absentee ballots must be received by the county board of elections by 5 p.m. Nov. 2.

All absentee ballots from military personnel and people overseas must be received by 5 p.m. Nov. 13.

Poll workers will be required to ask voters to show photo identification in the general election. However, voters will be allowed to cast ballots even if they do not have a photo ID.

The Legislature enacted a voter ID law this year, but a Commonwealth Court judge ruled last week that the state had not done enough to allow all voters to easily obtain proper IDs before the election.

Under another law, people voting at a polling place for the first time are required to show some form of identification such as a driver’s license, paycheck, bank statement or a firearm permit.
