Lori Brothers: Jameson 5k/10K participants are ‘all in this together’

NEW CASTLE — There was a “High School Musical” marathon on Disney channel this weekend.

As good timing would have it, both of my daughters were home for the holiday weekend. We watched parts of it together, reminiscing about how much we loved the movie series when they were younger.

The chorus to one of the songs croons, “We’re all in this together, And it shows, When we stand, Hand in hand, Make our dreams come true.”

Now, when you are raising young daughters, this kind of “Kool-aid” is good stuff. But I feel it speaks to a wider audience by embracing the joy of working together and feeling good about it. That’s the kind of world I want to live in.

Diana Ross invited a similar activism with, “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand, Make this world a better place, if you can.”

That song captures the same spirit that is in the air right here, in New Castle, as we gear up for the Jameson Heart Walk/Run. This annual happening makes New Castle a better place because of all of the people who show up and “light up” the morning. The fourth annual event is Saturday, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and the race starting at 8, at the Jameson South Conference Center, 1000 S. Mercer St.

The dawn of the race brings excitement. Everyone at the event is charged with anticipation. There’s proof that it’s not crazy to get up early, and get on your walking or running shoes.

It is confirmation that it is healthy, right and good to get out and walk, or run, the 3.1 miles (6.2 miles if you’re the ambitious, 10K type) through downtown New Castle because you have so many people right there with you. All who show up participate and contribute to the excitement. Last year, we had 400 participants. There is an unspoken agreement that we’re all in this together and we’re doing it well.

When race volunteers see those first silhouettes cast against the horizon on event day, they glow with appreciation because they know the participants are arriving to make a difference.

The first cause of the event is to raise awareness that a healthy lifestyle does positively impact health and well-being. Everyone who shows up helps live this statement.

Participation in something larger than yourself can lead to fulfillment and generate change. The change in your lifestyle can bring positive change in the culture and the world around you.

One decision to participate could shift your perspective. Have you ever noticed when you’ve been urged on by someone or something to get involved and make a difference you feel good after you’ve done it?  You may even ask with a sense of satisfaction, “Did I just do that?”

Last year, a dear woman named Kathy shocked her whole family by coming out to the event. It’s something she never would have considered doing before. She expressed elation at being part of something so exhilarating. She was proud of her accomplishment and happy that she motivated herself.

Sharing is a core action that comes about naturally whenever any of us joins together to interact in the giving and receiving of the best of who we are, and what we can offer.

Taking part in the opportunities that present avenues of connecting and sharing can begin a trend in your life; a trend toward being active, or staying active; a trend toward arriving somewhere new in your life. You may be surprised to discover that you have an interest and a passion to grow, and it may all begin with a simple willingness to say yes.

Involvement in something bigger than yourself can bring a big reward.

I love the way that Jamie Lee Curtis states it: “So, take what’s inside you and make big, bold choices. And for those who can’t speak for themselves, use bold voices. And make friends and love well, bring art to this place. And make this world better for the whole human race.”
