Firefighters battle two house blazes in county

NEW CASTLE — Firefighters had to contend with hot and humid weather conditions as they battled two blazes Thursday in Lawrence County.

The first fire occurred at around 7:15 p.m. on Hillside Road in Pulaski Township, Volunteer firefighter were forced to truck water from a distance down a one-lane road to reach the fire at the vacant home.

The second fire was in the city of New Castle. The call came in shortly before 9 p.m. on Shadyside Street near East Washington Street. City crews shut down a portion of Washington Street to allow firefighters to pour water on the blaze, which required an aerial truck.
