Your Leisure: Ellwood City to light up, host parade

NEW CASTLE — Ellwood City will be bustling over the weekend with its light-up night and annual holiday parade.

The downtown light-up night, planned for Friday, will celebrate the new community plaza.

The event will feature music on the stage of the new performance center on Lawrence Avenue, beginning at 4:30 p.m., with performances every half-hour through the evening.

A variety of vendors will be set up in town.

The borough’s annual parade, “Come Home For The Holidays,” will start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Lawrence Avenue.

The procession will feature traditional and religious float divisions. Prizes will be awarded for each category and for costumed marching groups. Judging will begin at 2:45 p.m. in the Lincoln High School parking lot.

The parade also will include bands, homecoming queens and courts, firetrucks and ambulances. Participants may not throw candy, but may hand it out on the sidelines.

Santa Claus will make his arrival in the parade.

Parade-goers are invited to stop at the municipal building after the parade, where children may visit with Santa. Entry is on the Sixth Street side of the building and exit will be through the front doors on Lawrence Avenue.

The parade committee is still accepting donations to cover expenses.

Pre-registration for each category is recommended by calling Bette Baney DeLoia, chairwoman, at (724) 752-9304 or (724) 679-4210. Today is the deadline.

Local peaches may be scarce in Lawrence County this summer. County fruit farmers are watching their peach trees closely, not sure how badly they were damaged by the winter’s extreme cold.

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
