Sarah Stright-Hartley: Houndstooth can add some bite to your wardrobe

NEW CASTLE — When new trends come around, the runways tend to go a bit overboard for us everyday folk.

The shows are designed to be a production and with that, they show variations of the trend — in an over-the-top way. So then the question becomes, how will these designers recreate the trends to sell in the stores? With a classic pattern such as houndstooth, it is easy to fit this trend in with your normal wear.

It doesn't need to be head to toe like the runways (seen in the photo to the right). You can easily incorporate this pattern into accessories in small doses to larger quantities, whatever your comfort level.

To the right I've found several easy ways to work this traditional pattern into your wardrobe. I particularly love the T-shirt. Mixed patterns are still very popular for fall and I love the combination of the stripes with the houndstooth. This could be easily worn for work or a casual day. The leggings, on the other hand, might be for those of you feeling a bit more "brave.” But when worn with a simple tunic and ballet flats, it becomes a trendy, easy, comfortable outfit. But if wearing the pattern on your clothing isn't for you, try it on an accessory.

A shoe is a great way to try out a trend when you aren't sure if it's for you. The slip-on loafers and the stiletto heels can be worn with any type of outfit, work or play. Just think of them as a bonus to a simple outfit. Or try the pattern in a bag and picture it with the perfect fall trench coat.  You'll look instantly classy and chic. A hair accessory or earring becomes a fun surprise, almost hidden, but in a playful pattern to really stand out when noticed.

Other options? A rain boot, a cell phone cover, a fun scarf. This pattern can be found in just about anything you can think of.

So wear it with solid clothes for a bit of fun in your work wardrobe. Or mix and match it with patterns to jazz up your casual wear. Either way, take a chance on the classic pattern and see if you can make it work for you.

Will you be trying it out?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.

Are you concerned enough about the Heartbleed bug on the Internet to change all of your social media and website passwords?

Yes. It’s always a good idea to change passwords regularly anyway. I just have so many, I’m not sure where to start.
No. From what I’ve read, companies are still trying to figure out how to fix the flaw. The bad guys will just have access to my NEW passwords, too.
Not sure, but I blame Al Gore. He invented the Internet, right? How’s he going to get us out of this mess?
