Lori Brothers: Time to stop dawdling and establish some goals!

NEW CASTLE — “Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.”

That’s Brian Tracy writes in his book “Eat That Frog! 21 Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time.”

The title of the book is a metaphor for conquering your most difficult tasks first.

This comic book-style outline gives great tips for helping you to meet your biggest challenges so that you can achieve greatness.

If you are not a planner, if you don’t create a structure to meet your ideals and dreams, or tackle the stuff that life may be throwing at you, it is important to take ownership of your procrastinating ways if you are to influence your health — or any area of your life.

Desire is an inner fuel. When you develop the inner willingness to meet your goals, you can move out of stuck patterns and limiting beliefs, and empower yourself to gain the patterns of success.

A goal-setting plan gives you clear steps for setting and achieving goals. Make sure you develop a clear vision of what you intend to accomplish, such as with exercise.    

“I use the Doug Petrik method of writing out my goals and posting them on my fridge,” said Doug Petrik, and nurse and local distance runner. “Just seeing them makes them work for me — the more I see them, the more I want to do them.”

Petrik says the key for him is to stay focused.

He also suggests the SMART method from the Ornish Spectrum Program is a good guideline, which defines successful goal setting as Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Tangible.

Writing goals down helps to create a structure to make the vision tangible in real time, and attainable on a day by day basis.

Motivational speaker, Napoleon Hill says that, “A goal is a dream with a deadline.”

With this in mind, it is important to be clear about the actions that will help you achieve the results you intend.

What action will you accomplish today, and when?

Equally important is identifying the actions that do not support your goal. Sleeping in, instead of getting up 20 minutes early for a morning walk, will not burn calories and improve your cardiovascular system.

We all seem to know this. So how do you make the shift internally to get yourself out from under the covers and into your tennis shoes?  Find tools to motivate yourself.

I’ve discovered that there is software designed to help anyone who is weak at list making and follow-through. GoalSetting1 and Life Tango are two applications that can move you through the structuring and task building process.

There are many more of these types of products.

It’s important to find the one that can help you to tailor your goals and your success.

Another useful tool is to join Sparkpeople. This online community of weight-loss enthusiasts is great for health and fitness related goals.

Remember to review your progress and to create new goals on a daily and weekly basis so that you are in direct relationship with the process of meeting the tasks that will lead to your success.
