Sarah Stright-Hartley: Don’t write off printed pants

NEW CASTLE — One of the top trends for spring is the printed pant.

In any print, in any color, this trend is definitely one that will make you stand out from the crowd. Floral patterns are the most common, but a strong graphic print in any pattern feels right on trend and fresh.

These pants may take extra guts to wear, but they can be made appropriate for any situation. From running errands to a creative professional environment, they give a special punch to your day. To the right I've put together a couple of looks using printed pants.

On the left is a more casual look. I also played with pattern mixing. The key to mixing patterns is to keep the colors in the same family. The blue stripes in the top reflect the blue flowers in the bottom. Using the blue in the necklace as well pulls the whole look together.

Keeping the rest of the look neutral — a classic denim jacket, tan bag and shoes — allows the outfit to stand out on its own. This look is perfect for running errands, or a lunch date with your girlfriends.

On the right is the perfect dressed-up look. If you happen to work in a creative environment, this outfit can even work for the office. The printed ankle length pants look perfectly polished when paired with a simple, classic, sleeveless top. The rest of the outfit also keeps the pants balanced — the wide belt and black shoes are classics. The oversized neutral colored cardigan pulls double duty in keeping you warm and adding an extra "cool" factor.

Are printed pants something that you'd wear in your everyday life?

Are you excited about this trend for spring?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
