Have you ever heard the saying, “The only difference between try and triumph is a little “umph”?
Where does “umph” come from? I feel it comes from inside of you. Sometimes, when you are tired and overwhelmed by what life is asking, or if you’ve been working hard to meet a goal still with no end in sight, you can get discouraged.
Turning discouragement into encouragement is a turning point on the road to triumph.
If you keep your hopes high you can access the voice of hope in yourself. Sometimes you have to reach deeper, or beyond yourself in order to get a second wind when life feels challenging.
I consider looking for encouragement a kind of “prayer” that you ask from life to keep you going even when you can’t see the end yet. Life can give you a positive whisper when you develop an attitude to listen and receive.
Receiving encouragement is rewarding. You don’t have to appear needy to accomplish getting moral and emotional support. As a matter of fact, people don’t even have to know that you are in the process of raising your own spirits. Encouragement often starts with yourself.
It is healthy to discover what lifts your spirits. It could be whistling a tune, taking a walk, or playing fetch with the dog. What is your secret “umph” ingredient?
It is also good to reach out to others to find the encouragement to journey on toward your success. Surround yourself with a good support network.
Triumph is the ultimate in success. Make sure you hunt down negative thoughts, and turn away from negative habits or negative people. These are the secrets of triumph.
“Umph” is another word for talent. Where do you bring that extra umph that leads you to positive contributions and to making a difference?
Also, “umph” and passion also go hand-in-hand. Deeply caring about the things that matter to you brings a lot of “umph” to fuel your efforts.
We all know the old adage,“When the going get’s tough, the tough get going.” There’s a lot of “umph” in that attitude. But it is normal to stall out at some point. That’s a good time to reassess and regroup in order to keep up the stamina to meet your goals.
“Hitting the wall” is actually a common setback in any challenge. When you get to the point where you perceive you can’t go on any longer, you’ve hit the wall. That’s when it’s time to freshen up and reshape your vision. This helps you to stay current with your goals.
Remember, that your aspirations are worth it. When you refocus on the value of what you intend, even if it doesn’t turn out the way you expect, there is valor in the boldness that you have set foot on the path toward your success. Keep the “umph” in trying and triumph will be yours.
Veggie Potato Salad
- 11⁄2 lb round red potatoes, cut into 1⁄2 inch cubes
- 1 cup fresh green beans cut into 2 inch-long pieces
- 2 cups broccoli &/or cauliflower florets
- 1⁄2 cup coarsely shredded carrot
- 1⁄2 cup bottled
- low fat ranch salad dressing
- 1⁄4 tsp black pepper
1. Place cubed potatoes in a large saucepan; add enough lightly salted water to cover. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes or just until tender. Drain well; cool.
2. In a small saucepan bring a small amount of lightly salted water to boiling. Add green beans; return to boiling. Cover and cook about 3 minutes or until crisp-tender. Drain; rinse with cold water.
3. In a very large bowl combine cooked potatoes, green beans, broccoli and/or cauliflower, and carrot. Add salad dressing and pepper; toss to coat. Cover and chill for 4 to 24 hours. Makes 8 (1-cup) servings.
