Erica Galvin: It’s hard to say goodbye to New Castle — but it’s time

NEW CASTLE — Sometimes, the scariest but most worthwhile things never make sense.

You can include my next step in that category.

After nine years of working in the New Castle community, it's time for me to move on.

I've had numerous discussions with my husband and family about the future. I've decided that it's time for me to close this chapter and begin a new one. It's time for me to take a leap into the unknown and trust God's plan.

When I was in college, I interviewed with a representative from a big newspaper firm. He asked me where I saw myself 10 years from now — in other words, today.

My answer was, "Working for a small newspaper in a tight-knit community."

He was shocked because most students say working for a big metro paper. He asked why a small town. My response, "Because that's where the real life happens and I want to be part of it."

I would not have been able to do that without the support of my co-workers and the New Castle News. Thank you for allowing me to follow my dreams and teaching me valuable lessons about this profession along the way.

I have seen the good and the bad in this town. And trust me, there is more good then bad. It was hard documenting the bad and it was fun documenting the good.

There were times of feeling included as part of a family or team and other times of feeling as if I was publicizing peoples' life-altering tragedies and I was the bad guy.

I may not have enjoyed every minute of this job, but I am thankful for every minute of it. It has made me a stronger person. It showed me who I want to become and what I want out of this life.

I will miss it.

Thank you to everyone for allowing me into your homes and into your hearts. I accomplished a dream of mine. But now the dream has changed and now I must change my life to achieve it.

I have developed so many relationships with wonderful people — coaches, athletes, students, athletic directors, police officers, firefighters, teachers, district judges, district attorneys, school boards, superintendents, public works — and everyone in between. You will all be with me on my next journey. You made an imprint my heart and I will never forget you and the lessons that you've indirectly or directly taught me about life and living it.

I don't know if I contributed to making the community a better place, but this community has made me a better person.

For the past nine years I've documented people living their lives. Now it's time for me to begin to live my own.

Who knows, maybe down the road, I will be able to document my very own growing family. God willing.

’Til then, I'll catch ya on the flip side.

(Erica Galvin's last day as a full-time employee at The News will be Aug. 9.)

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
