Sarah Stright-Hartley: You can be patriotic and fashionable this Independence Day

NEW CASTLE — The Fourth of July happens to be my favorite holiday.  There is something about the gathering of people from all over sitting together for hours just waiting for fireworks to light up the sky for a few minutes.  The sense of American pride is amazing and I'm always happy to be a part of it.  Patriotism runs high, but that doesn't mean you need to wrap yourself in everything red, white and blue.  To the right I've put together a few outfits for the day- no matter if you're at a cookout during the day, the fireworks at night, or a fancier Independence Day party, you can still look patriotic but stylish.

The first look is perfect for a daytime cookout when the sun is blazing hot.  A red striped tee with gray shorts and cute sandals looks cool, keeps you cool, and you still look festive.  A bucket bag is the summer "It" bag, and is easy for throwing in anything you may need during the day.  The second look is perfect for the night as temperatures cool down a bit.  If you notice, the entire look still has red, white and blue incorporated, but not in an obvious way.  The t-shirt is fun and trendy, and skinny jeans look great with blue striped espadrilles.  Sunglasses for the late day sun and a chic watch (so you know when to take your seats for the fireworks) are the perfect accessories.  Finally, if you get invited to a fancier party, a simple red, flared dress is perfectly patriotic and flattering on almost all body shapes.  Red, white and blue striped cork heels and a great statement necklace complete the look.  And if you need to make the dress more casual?  Just switch out the heels for a simple sandal (like those in the first outfit), remove the statement necklace, and you're ready to go!

What do you do for Independence Day?  Do you dress in your red, white, and blue best?

Another set of bookshelves might be necessary at my house very soon. It’s been a bountiful week. Edie Majesky of New Castle, who I have known most of my life, is aware of how much I love collecting old cookbooks.

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.

I love finding pieces that can be worn for just about every portion of my life.  From daytime, to work, and then on a date with my husband, I like pieces that can go the distance.
