Sarah Stright-Hartley: Overalls are coming back — are you all in?

NEW CASTLE — There's a trend that seems to be making the rounds that completely surprises me.

In fact, I haven't thought about it since the 1980s — or maybe the early 90s. Overalls seem to be back — so far quietly, but I'm interested to see if the trend gains momentum.

And I'm also interested to see what the average American consumer thinks about the trend. Personally, I don't see this as a trend I'll jump on board with, mainly because it reminds me too much of childhood. Now that I’m 30, it doesn't feel right for me.

But I'm curious; if the overalls were dressed up in the right way, would they be more appealing? I tried to do just that in the outfits to the right. I played with the idea of night time, daytime and casual looks. I'd love to hear your opinion — do these outfits open your mind a bit more to the idea?

In the night time outfit, I used a very chic pair of overalls — they're flared, silky material and don't look like the standard denim overalls that we usually think of. When worn alone they give an added air of interest. I also love adding bold accessories, like the red shoes and clutch and chunky gold chain.

For the daytime outfit, I played with the more standard denim look but increased the “chicness factor” by adding black pumps and a lace top. I also added a cool spiked bag and chunky black watch to give the outfit some edge. Finally, adding a cozy cardigan over the top gives the look a relaxed and casual feel for daytime.

In the final, casual outfit I played with a standard white T-shirt. This keeps the overalls from feeling too dressy. The chunky chain necklace and cute sandals are playful while the crossbody leather bag is a must to keep your hands free while traveling around.

So, after seeing a newer take on overalls, I'm curious — do you think you'll be trying out this trend?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
