Sarah Stright-Hartley: Sweatshirts an easy way to stay warm, stylish

NEW CASTLE — The fashion gods have decided to throw us all a bone this fall and winter.

They've decided that sweatshirts are style appropriate, when embellished.

You may have seen these sweatshirts crowding store racks recently (look at the first picture to the right for some great examples of the trend).  They're our standard, comfortable sweatshirts that we've always known and loved, but they're just a little bit hipper with their jeweled design.  Another great part? Because of the embellishments, minimal jewelry is required. The bling is already there! So these sweatshirts become one of the easiest things you can wear.

But in case you aren't convinced that they really CAN be dressy and not just gym clothes, check out my second picture over to the right. I've put together a few outfits to prove the point.

•Casual — Without making them extra casual, try pairing your sweatshirt with comfortable boyfriend jeans and heels. When you throw on heels, the look instantly becomes dressed up. This outfit is perfect for running errands, a lunch date, or hanging out with your pals at night. And in case you're wondering about the leopard print heels and how they "match" — allow me to express one of my beliefs — leopard print is a neutral. Try it with anything and everything and you'll see what I mean.

•Professional — This look can be something you wear to work, if you work in a more casual environment. I'd obviously never suggest to wear a sweatshirt (no matter how bejeweled it is) to a corporate office. But if you work in a more casual environment, give it a shot — maybe on a Friday to test the fashion waters. Try a simple jeweled sweatshirt (this white isn't quite as "loud" as the other two) with patterned trousers. And then keep the rest of your look professional. The heels and structured bag make the outfit dressy and grown up.

•Dressy — Going out on a casual date? Give an embellished sweatshirt a try. I love the black and gold combination of this one, so I stuck with the combo throughout the look. Black skinny jeans, black booties with gold details, and classic gold jewelry make this a great look for a dinner and movie date. You'll be comfortable, warm, and still incredibly stylish.

Tell me, is this a trend that you can jump on board with?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
