Sarah Stright-Hartley: Want the short story? It’s time to double up

NEW CASTLE — One of the things I tend to look for when buying new clothes is if they can pull double duty.

Can I wear it to work and out on the weekend? Can it be casual and dressy? This way it feels like I instantly double my wardrobe and can mix and match clothing much easier.

With the heatwave we've been experiencing, cute shorts that are easy, lightweight and can be taken from day to night are my go-to on the weekends. To the right, I've put together four outfits using two pairs of shorts. The shorts can easily be dressed up and down by simply switching up the top and accessories.

On the left, the fun floral shorts look great for a casual day when paired with a layered tank and easy sandals. The statement necklace adds an extra dimension and the black tote is easy for running errands during the day. The same shorts also look great paired with an embellished tank for nighttime (add a cardigan or blazer over the top if you get a little chilly).

Simple nude heels will make your legs look a mile long, vintage inspired dangle earrings, and a fun gold clutch complete the look. If you work in a casual environment, this would also be a great look for work if you add a blazer.

The outfits on the right are made instantly “chic-er” with the patterned silk shorts. I also love the black fringe detail lining the bottom of the shorts. For a casual look, wear the shorts with a comfy oversize T-shirt. With the multi-color shorts, any color tee would look great, but I love a simple gray to allow the shorts to stand out.

Teal sandals that mimic the blue in the shorts, a bucket bag (the popular shape for summer) and a classic oversized watch are great completer pieces. To dress it up, think lace. This lace tank adds extra femininity to the shorts — especially when paired with simple, sexy, strappy heels. A floral necklace and classic nude bag finish the look.

Would you wear these looks?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
