Sarah Stright-Hartley: Belly up and give crop top a shot

NEW CASTLE — By now you've surely seen that crop tops are a hot trend — I even spotted these tops during the winter! — and they aren't going away any time soon.

So work on that six pack and take a look at the images to the right. There are ways to make this trend work for you, if you dare. (Personally, I'm still scared of them and will reserve my belly baring for the beach.)

Crop tops have the ability to be both classy and sexy at the same time, but can very easily veer toward vulgar if not worn appropriately. Beware of what you pair the tops with. Stay away from showing a lot of belly while also wearing a tight skirt or pants. And if you love the idea but want to make it more appropriate for all situations, try wearing the crop top over a chiffon button front top (think Cher from “Clueless”).

So, how can you wear these? If you just want to show a sliver of belly (my personal favorite), wear a pretty crop top with a high waist skirt like I've shown to the right. A full swing skirt like the one pictured makes this look incredibly sweet but still sexy at the same time since it shows just a tiny bit of belly. Also consider a pair of high waist flared jeans, which makes the look very ’70s cool.

If you want to show a little more belly, try a bold crop top with a pair of dark lace shorts. Make sure the shorts are a little on the longer side, or perhaps slightly high waist so that you aren't showing too much skin. Or grab a crop top that is a bit longer if you're wearing shorter shorts.  Gladiator sandals look perfect with this style.

Finally, if you're feeling really bold, a mini crop top and low slung boyfriend jeans will show off a lot of toned belly. I love this idea for running errands during the day with a pair of casual sneakers. Keep the accessories to a minimum since your belly is clearly the standout.

Is this a look that you're going to try?
