Sarah Stright-Hartley: Cool, daring or dressy, over-the-knee boots worth a try

NEW CASTLE — One of the biggest fall/winter trends — and one of my favorites — is over-the-knee boots.

Depending on how you wear them, they can look extremely cool and also classy.

Surprised? I was too until I started to really think about how to wear them. I was worried that no matter what, they'd always fall toward the “Pretty Woman” side of things.  But if you're careful about the rest of your outfit, you'll have a very cool, daring look on your hands.

To the right I've put together a few outfits that demonstrate my point. First up is the casual look. Want to take your casual style up a notch? Try over-the-knee boots! When paired with distressed skinny jeans and an oversize sweater, the look is very downtown cool. Finish the look with a cozy scarf and classic accessories and no one is going to confuse you for Julia Roberts.

The second look, dressy, can be a little bit more difficult to pull off. Pairing over-the-knee boots with a mini skirt is always a gamble, but when you do it with a quilted skirt (also one of my favorite winter trends), and a chunky turtleneck sweater, you're covering up much more skin than you would be in a mini skirt and heels.

Still not comfortable? Try wearing tights with the skirt and boots as well. This leaves you completely covered and very classy looking.

The third look is my favorite. Leather pants have become such a staple and it's amazing how much you can wear with them. If you work in a creative office that allows you complete freedom in your office wear, give this combination a try. Leather pants and over-the-knee boots on their own are a bit too sexy for the office, but when paired with a high neck bow blouse, you become instantly more professional and command attention.

Keeping the rest of your look simple and in black and white is another way to allow the outfit to stand out. Though red lips never hurt!

Are over-the-knee boots something that you want to try?

Do you remember being told, “don’t play with your food” when you were a child?  Or maybe you’ve said this to your own children or grandchildren. I’ve heard stories about kids slipping food under the table to the dog or stuffing Brussels sprouts into their pockets to get out of the pain of eating them.
