Sarah Stright-Hartley: These pastels will put a spring in your step

NEW CASTLE — Is it just me or are pastels ubiquitous with spring?

Once the season hits, they're everywhere. It's taken me awhile to jump on the pastel bandwagon and even still I can't wear them head to toe like some women do. But they're such a pretty option for the time when the blooms are popping up.

My favorite way to wear them is as colored denim paired with a bolder top, or in an accessory like shoes or a bag. To the right, I've shown some great options in pastels for the season and also a few outfits using pastels in a range.

The first outfit has just a hint of pastel — in the sneakers. The top has a floral print, which, of course, is perfect for spring, but the colors are bolder. The pastel shoes pick up the hint of the green in the top to make it flow together. The gold chunky jewelry and black bag take the look further away from full-on pastel as well.

And by the way? Flares are coming back in a big way. Try switching out your skinny jeans for a pair.

In the second outfit, I've incorporated more pastel by making it a large portion of the outfit — the jeans. The top and scarf also are lighter in color but the pattern of the sweater includes bold colors. The shoes and bag are neutral enough to tie the outfit together. And let's talk about what a great watch that is with the bold magenta face!

Finally, the third outfit is completely pastel. The dress, which I'm crazy about, has several shades of pastel in it but it is done in a fun and intricate design. The shoes are a slightly darker shade than the dress (so as to not look like you're going to an Easter brunch), while the bag and accessories pull colors from the dress in various shapes.

Are you a pastel fan?
